| Welburn Festival Mark your calendars for the
8th Annual International Gourd Art Festival
[http://www.gourdfestival.com/] on June 26 - 27, 2004 at Welburn
Gourd Farm. Classes will take place on June 24 and 25. We encourage
all of our gourd artist members to submit artwork in the annual
California Gourd Society competition during the Festival. It's a
great opportunity to expose your art to thousands of people. Pieces
are due to be delivered to Welburn Gourd Farm by Thursday, June 24,
5:00pm, as the show will be set up for judging on Friday. Items
submitted by mail must be postmarked by June 15. Rules and
information on the adult and children's categories are on the CGS
website [http://calgourd.com/comp_rules.htm] and in the Spring 2004
issue of the Golden Gourd.
Call for Volunteers As the San Diego Patch, we will provide the
core volunteers needed to work at the CGS information/sales booth.
We will also provide some security in the exhibit tent and help out
with some of the festival activities and demonstrations. There will
be other CGS volunteers working beside us, and it's a great way to
interact with fellow gourders from all over the State.

There was indeed magic in the air Saturday evening at
the May 1st opening of "Baskets, Gourds & Imagination" at The
Next Door Gallery in Golden Hill. The exhibition features the work
of many of the finest contemporary fiber artists in Southern
California. It almost goes without saying that a substantial
majority of them are Guild Members - thirteen out of seventeen, in
fact. The approximately 50 pieces exhibited include almost every
imaginable type of basketry and gourd art technique: coiling,
twining, plain weaving, twill, construction, random-weave, sewing
(by both machine and hand), gourd carving, dyeing, bead work, and
painting, all done with consummate skill and imagination. The show
is the vision of Susan Roberts, Cathey Byrd and Maureen Ceccarelli,
the owner of The Next Door Gallery. They brought the artists
together to showcase what is new and exciting in the world of
basketry and gourd art. Polly Jacobs Giacchina and Johanna Hansen
hung the show beautifully, incorporating over four dozen works, some
quite large, into a very small space, yet achieving a balanced,
spacious feeling. Member participants are: Jeanne Ames, Cathey Byrd,
Michal Costello, Lynne Everett, Polly Jacobs Giacchina, Nancy
Johnson, Kathi Klopfenstein, Paul Klopfenstein, Carol E. Lang, Mary
Pryor, Susan Roberts, Don Weeke, Peggy Weidemann. Additional
participants are Charlotte Bird, Keely Berry-LeBlanc, Robin Pryzbyz,
and Cat Varvis. A small jewel, The Next Door Gallery is affiliated,
and shares space, with Studio Maureen at 2963 Beech Street, San
Diego, three minutes from the heart of downtown San Diego. Hours are
Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m.
